Step 1: Make 4 eight inch pans of white cake and an extra pan (any size it doesn't matter) of your colored cake. I just used red food coloring and some white cake mix to make the pink. Do what ever color you feel like or you could make a red velvet cake for your heart. Wouldn't that be yummy!!!
Step 2: After your white cakes have cooled completely you want to take them out of the pans and level the tops off. You can just eye ball it or Wal-Mart has a handy little cake leveler tool that you can get for about 3 bucks. It makes the job so much easier, trust me!!!
Step 3: Next you want to add about a 1/2 cup of frosting to the top of TWO of your white cakes. Then place the other two one top of those. So you want to have TWO cakes that have two tiers.
Two, two tiered cakes. Confused yet with all these twos?
Step 4: Wrap both cakes in saran wrap and place in the fridge (for about an hour) or freezer (25 to 30 minutes). They have to chill before you carve them.
Step 5: To make sure you have some uniformity to the heart design you need to tie two toothpicks to a piece of string or twine. Place one toothpick in the center of the cake, then (holding firmly) drag the outside toothpick around the cake and make a circle. Do this to both white cakes. Inside the circle is where you are going to be carving.
See like this! I know its hard to see the circle, but its there.
Step 6: Here comes the carving!! On one cake you want to carve out a "V" shape. This is going to be the bottom of the heart. The other cake is a little harder but not by much. On this one you want to make like a little mountain in the middle and carve/dig out a mote around it. This is your top. I wish I would of taken a picture of both cakes all carved out for you but I was really excited for the next few steps!!
Step 7: This time you want to grab you colored cake. Cut off any brown sides and top (you don't have to worry so much about the bottom). Next take a fork and drag it across the cake to break up. Take about a 1/2 cup to a full cup of frosting and mix it together with your broken up colored cake. You want it to be almost like a wet play dough.
Step 8: Fill in the areas of your white cake that are carved out with your mixture. Just spoon it in and press it down.
All filled in!
At this point you might want to chill your cakes again. Or you can be brave and a little impatient like me and move on to the next steps.
Step 9: One the bottom half of your cake you want to add some frosting around the sides to act like a glue to hold on the top.
Try not to get any frosting in the middle. When you cut into the cake you will see it.
Step 10: You gotta be brave and fast on this last step. Take your top cake and flip it on to your bottom half. If you can do it with no problems just frost and decorate your cake and ENJOY!!!
